How to convert a value that is not in a table

  • Kilograms to pounds: divide by 0.45359237.
  • Pounds to kilograms: multiply by 0.45359237.
  • Stones and pounds to kilograms: multiply the stones by 14, add the pounds, then multiply by 0.45359237.
  • Ounces to grams: multiply by 28.349523125.

You can also add rows. 23 kg is 20 kg plus 3 kg. Add the exact values before rounding: 23 divided by 0.45359237 is 50.7 pounds.

Worked example: a suitcase of 23 kg

  1. 23 divided by 0.45359237 is 50.706 pounds.
  2. Rounded to one decimal the suitcase weighs 50.7 pounds.

A limit of 50 pounds is therefore slightly lower than a limit of 23 kg: 50 pounds are 22.68 kg. If your ticket states the limit in one unit and your scale shows the other, convert the limit, not only the reading.

Common mistakes

  • Using 2.2 pounds per kilogram for large values. At 100 kg the shortcut gives 220 pounds; the exact value is 220.5.
  • Reading 10.5 stone as 10 stone 5 pounds. Half a stone is 7 pounds.
  • Confusing ounces of weight with fluid ounces. A fluid ounce measures volume.
  • Confusing the ton of 2000 pounds, the ton of 2240 pounds and the tonne of 1000 kg. Ask which one is meant.
