How to convert a value that is not in a table
- Inches to centimetres: multiply by 2.54.
- Centimetres to inches: divide by 2.54.
- Feet and inches to centimetres: multiply the feet by 12, add the inches, then multiply by 2.54.
- Miles to kilometres: multiply by 1.609344.
- Kilometres to miles: divide by 1.609344.
You can also add rows. 46 inches is 40 inches plus 6 inches: 101.60 cm plus 15.24 cm is 116.84 cm.
Worked example: a height of 5 ft 7 in
- 5 feet are 5 times 12, which is 60 inches.
- 60 inches plus 7 inches are 67 inches.
- 67 times 2.54 is 170.18 centimetres.
Rounded to one decimal the height is 170.2 cm, the value in the height table.
Common mistakes
- Reading 5.7 feet as 5 feet 7 inches. 5.7 feet are 5 feet 8.4 inches, because a foot has 12 inches, not 10.
- Rounding too early. Convert first, then round the result.
- Using 2.5 instead of 2.54. Over 40 inches the difference is 1.6 cm, enough to pick the wrong size.
- Mixing up the mile and the nautical mile. A nautical mile is 1.852 km and is used at sea and in aviation.
