How to use the tables: reference points
| Reference point | Celsius (°C) | Fahrenheit (°F) | Kelvin (K) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absolute zero | -273.15 | -459.67 | 0 |
| Scales meet | -40 | -40 | 233.15 |
| Water freezes | 0 | 32 | 273.15 |
| Room temperature | 20 | 68 | 293.15 |
| Body temperature | 37 | 98.6 | 310.15 |
| Water boils at sea level | 100 | 212 | 373.15 |
Room and body temperature are everyday reference values, not limits. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at sea level pressure and at lower temperatures at altitude.

The National Health Service of the United Kingdom describes a high temperature as usually 38 degrees Celsius or above, which is 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Normal body temperature differs between people and during the day. This table is for converting readings; it is not medical advice.
Oven temperatures
The second column is the exact conversion. The third column rounds it to the nearest 25 degrees, a convenient step for setting a dial.
| Celsius (°C) | Fahrenheit, exact (°F) | Nearest 25 degree step (°F) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 212 | 200 |
| 110 | 230 | 225 |
| 120 | 248 | 250 |
| 130 | 266 | 275 |
| 140 | 284 | 275 |
| 150 | 302 | 300 |
| 160 | 320 | 325 |
| 170 | 338 | 350 |
| 180 | 356 | 350 |
| 190 | 374 | 375 |
| 200 | 392 | 400 |
| 210 | 410 | 400 |
| 220 | 428 | 425 |
| 230 | 446 | 450 |
| 240 | 464 | 475 |
| 250 | 482 | 475 |
| 260 | 500 | 500 |
In the other direction, 350 degrees Fahrenheit are 176.7 degrees Celsius; 175 and 180 are the nearest round settings.
How the tables are derived: formulas
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32, multiply by 5, divide by 9.
- Celsius to kelvin: add 273.15.
A difference of one degree Celsius equals a difference of 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit. When you convert a difference, for example a rise of 5 degrees, do not add 32.
Worked example: 25 degrees Celsius
- 25 times 9 is 225.
- 225 divided by 5 is 45.
- 45 plus 32 is 77.
25 degrees Celsius are 77 degrees Fahrenheit. In the other direction: 77 minus 32 is 45, times 5 is 225, divided by 9 is 25.
Common mistakes
- Adding 32 before multiplying. Multiply first, then add.
- Doubling and adding 30 for exact work. The shortcut is fine for weather, but at 100 degrees Celsius it gives 230 instead of 212.
- Converting a temperature difference like a temperature. A rise of 10 degrees Celsius is a rise of 18 degrees Fahrenheit, not 50.
- Writing degrees kelvin. The unit is the kelvin, without the word degree.
Sources and checks
The values in the chart are calculated from the definitions in the sources below. They are not copied from another chart. Last checked against the sources on September 28, 2026.
Every value is calculated with F = C × 9/5 + 32 and K = C + 273.15, then rounded half up to the decimals shown.
The oven column with the nearest 25 degree step is a rounding of the exact value for convenience. It is not a recipe standard. Gas mark numbers are left out because no authoritative source was found.
This table is not medical advice. Thermometers, measuring sites and people differ.

Frequently asked questions
- At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?
- At minus 40 degrees. Minus 40 degrees Celsius is minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
- What is 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?
- 100 minus 32 is 68; 68 times 5 divided by 9 is 37.8 degrees Celsius, rounded to one decimal.
- What is 180 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?
- 180 degrees Celsius are exactly 356 degrees Fahrenheit. Rounded to the nearest 25 degrees that is 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- What is absolute zero?
- Absolute zero is 0 kelvin, which is minus 273.15 degrees Celsius or minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Why does this page have no gas mark column?
- We found no authoritative source that defines gas mark numbers in degrees. Rather than copy a conventional table that we cannot verify, the page leaves gas marks out.
