Width by length of the mattress. Sizes are stated in the unit of their publisher and converted to the other unit.

How to find the nearest size abroad

1. Measure the mattress, not the bed frame, or take its size from the label. Enter width and length in centimetres or inches; the order does not matter.
2. The finder shows, for each region, the published size with the smallest difference in width and length together, and says how much wider or narrower and longer or shorter it is.
3. Check both differences. A size with a matching width can be 10 cm shorter.
4. For fitted sheets, choose a size that matches within a few centimetres. For a mattress that must fit a frame, buy the size the frame was made for.

Without JavaScript the finder is unavailable; the chart below lists the sizes sorted by width, so you can compare by hand.

How the nearest size is chosen

The finder adds the difference in width and the difference in length and picks the size with the smallest total. When two sizes are equally near, it prefers the one that is not smaller in either direction.

It compares the sizes of the regional pages: the US sizes of the Better Sleep Council, the UK sizes of the National Bed Federation, every continental size listed in the European size guides we checked, the Australian sizes of the consumer organisation CHOICE and the New Zealand sizes of the manufacturer SleepMaker. These are nominal sizes; manufacturers deviate by one to two centimetres.

Nearest does not mean interchangeable. Bedding is made for a size, and a fitted sheet for a mattress that is 5 cm wider will be tight. We have no checked data for bedding sizes, so the finder compares mattresses only.

The same name, different sizes

• King: 150 × 200 cm in the United Kingdom, 183 × 203 cm in Australia, 193 × 203.2 cm in the United States.
• Queen: 152.4 × 203.2 cm in the United States and 153 × 203 cm in Australia. The UK list has no queen; its king is the nearest size.
• Single: 90 × 190 cm in the United Kingdom and 92 × 187 cm in Australia. The United States calls its narrowest adult size Twin, 96.5 × 190.5 cm.
• Double: 135 × 190 cm in the United Kingdom and 137 × 187 cm in Australia. The nearest US size is Full, 134.6 × 190.5 cm.

Continental Europe avoids the problem by naming sizes after their measurements.

Worked example: moving between countries

You own Queen bedding, made for 152.4 × 203.2 cm. In the chart the nearest UK size is king, 150 × 200 cm: 2.4 cm narrower and 3.2 cm shorter. Fitted sheets for a US Queen will sit slightly loose on a UK king mattress.

Your US King bedding, made for 193 cm width, has no close UK match. The widest common UK size, super king, is 180 cm wide.

A mattress of 120 × 200 cm, a size sold in Italy and the Netherlands, is small double in the United Kingdom (120 × 190 cm, 10 cm shorter), Full in the United States (134.6 × 190.5 cm, 14.6 cm wider and 9.5 cm shorter) and King single in Australia (106 × 203 cm, 14 cm narrower and 3 cm longer).

Common mistakes

• Shopping by name across borders.
• Comparing width only. UK singles and doubles are 190 cm long, continental sizes mostly 200 cm, US Queen and King 203.2 cm.
• Treating nominal sizes as exact. Manufacturers deviate by one to two centimetres.
• Assuming this list is complete. Each region has further sizes; see the regional pages.

The values in the chart are the sizes published by the organisations listed below. Last checked against the sources on September 28, 2026.

US sizes are those of the Better Sleep Council, UK sizes those of the National Bed Federation, Australian sizes those of CHOICE. The European rows are four sizes that the size guides of all five checked countries list.

Each size is stated in the unit of its publisher and converted at 2.54 cm per inch, rounded to one decimal.

These are nominal sizes. Manufacturers deviate by one to two centimetres, and names such as King mean different sizes in different countries.

The finder compares every size of the regional pages for continental Europe and the SleepMaker sizes for New Zealand, in addition to the sizes in the chart. Nearest means the smallest sum of the width and length differences.
