Continental Europe has no common names for bed sizes: a mattress is sold by its width and length in centimetres. 90 × 200, 140 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm are listed in every country we checked.

Mattresses of 190 cm length are listed in France, Italy and Spain. Spain also has widths of its own: 105, 135 and 150 cm.

The Netherlands: longer beds
The Dutch consumer association lists widths of 70, 80, 90 and 100 cm for single beds, 120 and 140 cm for the size in between, and 160, 180 and 200 cm for double beds. Lengths are 190, 200, 210 or 220 cm, with 200 cm as the standard length.
How to use the charts
- Read the size on the label of the bed frame or the old mattress. It is printed as width × length in centimetres.
- Buy the mattress in exactly that size. Names such as king or queen are not used consistently on the continent.
- For bedding from another country, compare centimetres, not names.
Two single mattresses side by side make a double bed: two mattresses of 90 × 200 cm cover 180 × 200 cm.
Is there a European standard?
Not for the sizes themselves. The European standard EN 1334 describes how beds and mattresses are measured and which tolerances are recommended. According to its catalogue entry it does not list nominal sizes; we did not read the full text, which is sold by the standards bodies.
The sizes on this page are therefore what manufacturers and retailers in each country list, not values prescribed by a standard.
Worked example: a UK fitted sheet on a continental bed
You sleep in a bed of 160 × 200 cm in Germany and want to order a fitted sheet from the United Kingdom. The nearest UK sizes are king, 150 × 200 cm, and super king, 180 × 200 cm.
Neither matches: the king sheet is 10 cm too narrow and the super king sheet 20 cm too wide. Look for a seller that states 160 × 200 cm.
Common mistakes
- Ordering by name. A king in one country is not a king in another.
- Assuming every European mattress is 200 cm long. France, Italy and Spain also list 190 cm.
- Buying a Spanish 135 × 190 cm mattress for a frame of 140 × 200 cm, or the reverse.
- Reading the country column as complete. A size can be sold in a country without appearing in the guides we checked.

- There is no single standard. Sizes of 90 × 200, 140 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm are listed in all five countries we checked: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.

- 160 × 200 cm is 63 by 78.7 inches. It is wider than a US Queen, which is 60 by 80 inches, and slightly shorter.

- Spain has traditional sizes of its own: 90, 105, 135 and 150 cm wide and 190 cm long. Spanish retailers list them next to the sizes used in the rest of Europe.
