How to use the chart

1. Measure your chest at its fullest part, with the tape level.
2. Choose chest in the finder and enter the measurement. The finder highlights the first size that is large enough.
3. If you know your size in one system, enter it instead to see the other.
4. Compare with the size chart of the brand before you buy.

Without JavaScript the finder is unavailable, but the chart is complete.

How the sizes are derived

• US and UK size: the chest girth of the wearer in inches. A size 40 is made for a chest of 40 inches.
• European size: the US and UK size plus 10. The chart of one large European brand prints sizes 44 to 60 next to US and UK sizes 34 to 50.
• Chest in centimetres: inches times 2.54.

The European number is close to half the chest girth in centimetres: size 50 stands for a chest of about 100 cm. The offset of ten is the simpler rule and matches printed charts.

The chest column is a body measurement. The jacket itself is wider, by an amount the maker chooses.

Worked example

Your chest measures 104 cm.

1. 104 divided by 2.54 is 40.9 inches.
2. The first size that is large enough is 42, made for a chest of 106.7 cm.
3. In European sizes that is 42 plus 10, which is 52.

Chest sizes are two inches apart, so many measurements fall between two sizes. The finder selects the larger one.

What the chart does not cover

• Length. Letters such as S, R and L, or short, regular and long, describe the length of jacket and sleeves.
• Suit trousers. They are sized by waist.
• Cut. A slim cut and a classic cut of the same size fit differently.

• Waist and inseam in inches and centimetres

Common mistakes

• Measuring over a jacket or a thick jumper. Measure over a shirt.
• Measuring the jacket instead of the body. The size refers to the chest of the wearer.
• Subtracting or adding ten in the wrong direction. The European number is the larger one.
• Assuming Italian and French suit numbers follow other rules. The chart we checked prints them like the European number, but individual brands may differ.

Sources and checks

The values in the chart are calculated from the definitions in the sources below. They are not copied from another chart. Last checked against the sources on September 28, 2026.

US and UK jacket sizes are the chest girth in inches. The continental European size is that number plus 10, as printed in the Hugo Boss chart for sizes 34 to 50. Centimetres are inches times 2.54.

The chest column is a body measurement, not the width of the jacket. These numbers are retail conventions, not a standard. Brands cut differently, and the same number is cut larger by some brands than by others. Use the size chart of the brand and its body measurements when you buy.

Length letters such as S, R and L, and the waist of suit trousers, are not covered.

Used for: European sizes 44 to 60 printed next to UK and US sizes 34 to 50.
